#MyPediaSureJourney: 30-Day Update and Surprising Results

Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional and so all the information given in this post should only be taken as a mother’s experience and never as a substitute for a paediatrician’s professional advice.

Introduction

Last month I began a journey with my 5-year-old fussy eater towards better nutrition. As promised, I am back with the 30-day update of our journey and the results of our little experiment so far.

Before I started on this path, for me, PediaSure nutrition was just another health supplement akin to the other brands I had used interchangeably in the past as a taste enhancer with our son’s daily milk intake. However, during this past month, I have come to love PediaSure for reasons other than simply being a healthy growth supplement.

But before I delve deeper into our journey, I must re-emphasize that I am not a paediatrician and the positive results I mention in this post are simply my experience of using “PediaSure for kids” with our son. Since all children are inherently different, you would need to conduct your own trials and research and come to your own conclusions regarding the optimum level of PediaSure usage for your kids.

I must also remind you that PediaSure is NOT FOR CHILDREN WHO ARE LACTOSE INTOLERANT or who have galactosemia. Also, PediaSure is for children older than 2 years of age. And last, but not the least, PediaSure is a nutrition supplement to bridge the nutritional gaps in your child’s diet, especially if they’re fussy eaters. That being said, it should never be used as a replacement/substitute in place of healthy balanced meals.

Now that all the important guidelines are out of the way, let me tell you more about our 30-day journey, where I’d like to discuss our PediaSure usage schedule, favourite PediaSure recipes and most importantly, the good things that we have noticed since we started using it for our son. Please read on and try it out with your picky eaters too. I am sure you and your children will enjoy it immensely and you will see for yourself that PediaSure could be the right growth partner for you as well.

PediaSure Flavours, Preparation Method, and Frequency

Last month, we tried two flavors of PediaSure powder – Premium Chocolate and Vanilla.

Vanilla was Sonny’s favorite flavor, hands down. He liked the chocolate flavor too but he definitely preferred Vanilla, probably because it lent itself to more variety and we were able to try out a few recipes with it.

Preparation Method

We followed the instructions on the container to a large extent so if you’re using it for the first time, you can also start from there too and customize later on, as per your child’s preferences.

Ingredients:
  • PediaSure powder – a couple of level scoops (NOTE: Always use the scooper provided with the pack to measure)
  • 100% Whole Milk – 3/4th Glass (Approx. 200 ml)
 Steps:
  • Add the scoops of PediaSure powder to a glass and then add approx. 100 ml of milk. Stir well to mix in the powder and then slowly add in the rest of the milk.
  • Check the consistency of the drink and add a little more milk if needed.
Frequency

In a 24-hour period, Sonny consumed one glass of milk with PediaSure; approximately 250 ml (give or take 10 ml).

Schedule

Sonny drank either PediaSure Vanilla or PediaSure Premium Chocolate with milk as part of his daily evening snack time routine. This schedule worked best for us because it stopped him from getting excessively hungry before dinner (in the past this led to binge eating of junk food – chips, cookies, and chocolates – usually killing his tiny appetite before dinner). Also, evenings being the most relaxed time of our day, we were free to try out and experiment with new, healthy PediaSure recipes together, which got our otherwise fussy eater very excited! This brings me to the next section of this post.

Favourite PediaSure Recipes

During the last month, we experimented with a few PediaSure recipes and the Banana Milkshake was Sonny’s favorite of the lot.

Banana Milkshake (Serves 1)

Ingredients
  • One small banana
  • A couple of scoops of PediaSure Vanilla powder
  • 150 ml whole milk
  • 1 Ice cube (Optional)
  • Sugar to taste (Optional
Steps

Put all the ingredients together in a food processor and blitz till the ingredients are blended. Add a little extra milk or water if the milkshake is too thick. Pour into a glass, add a thick straw and serve cold.

Strawberry Icecream Milkshake (Serves 1)

Ingredients
  • 1 scoop strawberry ice-cream
  • 5 medium sized strawberries
  • A couple of scoops of PediaSure powder (Vanilla)
  • 150 ml whole milk
  • Sugar to taste (optional)
Steps

Like with the Banana Milkshake, put all the ingredients together in a food processor, blitz till it’s all blended. Add a little more milk/water if the mix is too thick. Pour it into a glass, add the thick straw and serve cold.

Chocolate Milkshake (Serves 1)

Ingredients
  • 1 handful Chocos (or other similar breakfast cereal)
  • 2 ice cubes (Optional)
  • A couple of scoops of PediaSure powder (Premium Chocolate)
  • 150 ml whole milk
  • Sugar to taste (optional)
Steps

Follow the same procedure you would for the Banana and Strawberry Milkshakes and serve it cold with a thick straw.

Apple Custard (Serves 1)

Ingredients
  • 1 medium apple, peeled and diced into small cubes
  • 1 tablespoon custard powder (readymade)
  • A couple of scoops of PediaSure powder (Vanilla)
  • 150 ml whole milk
  • Water (as required)
  • Dry fruits to taste (optional)
  • Sugar to taste (optional)
Steps
  • In a pan, cook the apples for about 10 minutes on low to medium heat or until all the extra liquid (apple juice) is absorbed. Let the cooked apples rest till they cool down.
  • In a separate pan, make a slightly thin custard by heating about 100 ml of whole milk with 1 tablespoon of custard powder. Add water, if required. (Do not add sugar to the custard at this point). Refrigerate the custard till it is chilled.
  • In the remaining 50 ml of milk, mix a couple of scoops of PediaSure Vanilla powder to make a thick liquid.
  • Pour the chilled custard and cooked apples in a bowl and mix well. Finally, add the PediaSure Vanilla liquid and mix in. Add more PediaSure powder or water, as the case may be, to thicken or thin out the custard.
  • Add sugar, only if required.
  • Garnish with dried fruits (Sonny doesn’t enjoy dry fruits much, so I skipped this part after the first try).
  • Serve chilled.

You can experiment with more recipes depending on your child’s favorite healthy foods or snacks. So, go ahead, and sprinkle a little PediaSure powder onto those smoothies or cold breakfast cereals to pack-in an extra punch with every bite of your picky eaters’ snacks.

30-Day Observations

Finally, let me talk about the positive changes I have noticed in the past 30 days regarding Sonny’s growth and development. I expected some things, but there are a couple that pleasantly surprised me:

Immunity

The one big surprise while using PediaSure has been the distinct improvement in immunity that I have noticed in Sonny this winter. At the rate of jinxing our decrease in doctor’s visits this season, I am happy to report that Sonny’s immunity to cold has definitely been great.

As I mentioned in my last post, Sonny is prone to severe allergic coughs during the winters. This year, thankfully, we haven’t seen their onset. Although we’re about done with winter, I am hoping that this successful run would continue and we would not have to visit the pediatrician anytime soon!

Others

Concentration Levels: Another thing that I noticed in the last 30-day period is related to Sonny’s concentration levels. As many of my frequent readers know by now, Sonny is not currently going to any school and I am responsible for his homeschooling.

Although he is a very bright child and learns new things quite fast, like all bright children, he is equally restless and hates sitting in one place practicing repetitive things like handwriting. I have noticed, of late, he appears to be a little more focused during our study sessions and that’s great!

Energy Levels: Sonny has always been a very active child and keeps me on my toes day in and day out. During the last month, I’m happy to report that his energy levels have not dropped and he’s just as spirited as always.

Conclusion

After the 30-day period with PediaSure, I am happy to say that it is working out great for our fussy eater. Though Sonny’s eating habits are still borderline picky, at least now, I am less worried about his overall growth and development due to his on and off eating days. With PediaSure, I feel relaxed even on the days when he barely touches his food as it is helping bridge the gap effectively.

So, there you have it. My journey with PediaSure nutrition has been a positive one so far and I am definitely looking forward to the next leg.

Before I end this post, here are a couple of before and after pictures of Sonny to document his physical changes till date. I have tried my best to capture the before and after look in these pictures to the best of my photographic abilities (and I do apologize beforehand for my not-so-professional clicks!).

Lastly, I should mention that although PediaSure approached me to review their product as part of their #90DaysWithPediaSure campaign, all views and opinions expressed in my writing are my own. So do follow me on #MyPediaSureJourney as I show you just how the supplement has worked out for my 5-year-old over the next month also.

I am quite excited, hope you are too! Until then, ciao.

A Tale of Three Fish

Flash-back to thirty years ago. One of my favorite childhood stories from “Hitopadesha” (I think) as narrated by my grandfather goes like this: “…
