Blogging 101

Monthly updates, lessons learned and site statistics for September 2016

Happy October, FertileBrains Readers!

I am back with the analysis of last month’s traffic data here at FertileBrains along with the latest updates, lessons learned, future plans and more. So let me get started.

Traffic Report For September 2016

Here’s last month, September’s Google Analytics Monthly Site Statistics for your reference.

Observations and Lessons Learned

Thumbs Up
  • There is 33% increase in the number of page views and 52% increase in the number of monthly unique visitors at FertileBrains without any additional effort from my side (which is great!).
  • Again, just like August, I wrote fewer posts in September (5 to be exact) and I had a very hectic personal schedule (My son turned five, I traveled 1500+ miles, got my very first tattoo etc. … Did you notice? 😉 ). But I was able to balance it all (yay!), which is exactly the way I want this blog to work out for me moving forward too. Had the increase in page views come at the cost of family life, I would not have liked it much now, would I?
Thumbs Down
  • Though the bounce rate is still quite high (88%), with the change in the site’s theme, I am hoping to bring it down this month.

Did you know: The benchmark average bounce rate for blogs is 70 to 98%? (Source: Hubspot)

  • With the increased number of visitors per hour, the site performance has been a little iffy. I am still at the halfway mark of exceeding the number of visitors that my service provider can handle with my current plan, but I am a little worried because, at present, there are chances of breakdown with sudden spikes.
Points To Ponder and Future Plans

I finally took a leap of faith and bought my first premium theme and I could not be happier. I was doing a lot of code customizations to my earlier theme and yet, somehow, it felt lacking. I wanted something fresh and powerful enough to move my blog to the next level. And finally, I found what I was looking for 🙂 And boy, I couldn’t be happier! I have already seen an improvement in my conversion rates thanks to the new theme. So yeah, the moral of the story – Find a premium theme with the features that you need and go for it. You will see better results on your blog almost instantaneously.

FertileBrains will complete two years of its existence in the Blogosphere this month and I will write about my report card/performance from last year and also the lessons that I have learned. I cannot wait to share all this with you in mid-October!

Like I keep saying, blogging combines my two loves – technology and writing. I have been working on a couple of side automation projects to cut down on the time it takes to complete some repetitive blogging tasks. I am hoping to launch the beta version of those products in a few months (Although I am not quite sure how long it will take me given that I will be homeschooling our son in 2017 too!). Nonetheless, I am super excited about those projects…coding always makes me so happy 🙂 (Psst – Don’t forget to subscribe to our mailing list to know more and get notified when I launch them).
